The following email message went out to the campaign's supporters on Sunday, April 7:
Dear Harbor Coalition supporters,
Happy spring! Since our good work together to help our bi-state, bi-partisan delegation secure the $60 billion in federal funding to allow our region recovery from Superstorm Sandy, the NY-NJ Harbor Coalition has been hard at work behind the scenes to ensure key decision makers understand the unique needs of our urban waterfront as they divvy up these critical dollars to help us rebuild and become more resilient.
We’ve been meeting with Congressional offices, federal agencies and local leaders to educate them on the vision we share for a clean, safe, vibrant, accessible, resilient and naturally fortified urban coastline. For our region to build back smarter, funding must be invested in forward-thinking projects that restore natural habitat and shoreline, create resilient, floodable parks and greenways, protect underserved and vulnerable communities, and support green infrastructure and sustainable maritime commerce.
Thanks to input we received from supporters like you – through our website, workshops and member organizations – the Harbor Coalition has recommended 20 projects for Sandy funding. These projects are just a start, but they represent the kind of multi-beneficial work that helps communities, the environment, our economy and quality of life – while also improving resiliency and storm protection.
All together, these projects would:
· Restore, protect or create some 1,090 acres of natural habitat
· Repair or build 36+ miles of waterfront parks, greenways or bike paths
· Expand public access or maritime opportunities at 16 sites
· Invest up to $900 million in green, sustainable projects, potentially creating 18,000 jobs
But now the real work begins! As dedicated, informed community members, your support is critical to ensure these projects are indeed considered for funding. Please share this project list with your colleagues, friends and family, and make sure they know how this work would help to restore our harbor and revitalize our region. By working together, we can help make sure Sandy funding is wisely invested in projects that benefit our coastal communities and local economy, improve our way of life, protect our environment and also make us more resilient and better protected.
Thank you again for your ongoing commitment to the cause, and for all you continue to do to help our region recover, grow and prosper.
The NY-NJ Harbor Coalition
